How do I find a court case if I have the citation?
Answer
You have access to court cases in the NAU Online Library. One way to find a case is by its citation. Go to the list of databases in the NAU Online Library and click on Nexis Uni.
Here is a short video on how to find a case by citation in Nexis Uni: Find a Case by Citation in Nexis Uni.
Or you can follow these instructions: in the middle of the Nexis Uni homepage, you will see "Guided Search" Under "What are you interested in?" click on Cases. Which Jurisdiction - click on Federal or State cases. In the "Search in all Cases for" box, type the citation of the case - example: 999 F.3d 111. Click on Search. Don't type the name of the case. (Hint: If you can't find the case by typing the citation, then try searching just the name of the case.)
Court cases can be lengthy. The beginning of the case tells you the court information and date. Scroll down and read the case summary. After that, there will be "headnotes" - these are the points of law in the case. You can skip those and read them later. Continue to scroll down to the Opinion - this is the main part of the case.
At the top of the page, you will see options to print, email or download the case.
